This is a question that our office receives on a fairly frequent basis. While choosing the right deck fastener for your project may be a little time-consuming, choosing the correct number of fasteners does not need to be.
The general rule of thumb for standard deck fasteners is 350 screws for every 100 square feet of decking, which is based on standard 6" wide boards (5-1/2" actual), and 16" joist spacing. For hidden clips, because only one is used per joist, simply cut this number in half so that 175 pieces are required for every 100 square feet of decking.
With that said, not all decks are the same. Some people will be using 12" joist spacing and others 24". Some will be using 6" wide boards, while some will be using 4" wide. To simplify the process for our customers, we have created an easy to use deck fastener calculator.
By answering a few basic questions regarding your deck, it will help you estimate the number of fasteners that will be required for your project. This tool will also help you choose the right fasteners. Tell us what you're looking for and it provides fasteners that are a good fit. The tool links you to the product catalog pages on our site where you'll find detailed product info, installation instructions, demonstration videos and pricing so you may purchase right there.
