On occasion, I get asked by customers if stainless steel hardware is absolutely necessary for their coastal project and my answer is always the same - absolutely yes. Very often, contractors and homeowners see fasteners as a way to save some money and get closer to the budget from which they have already drifted.
The fact is that there are many risks associated with using improper hardware.
1. Financial: The most expensive part of building any deck is obviously the deck boards. The second-highest cost, however, isn't usually the hardware, but the labor associated with its construction. Using stainless steel fasteners will extend the longevity of your deck and reduce the need for future repairs and maintenance.
2. Aesthetic: Not only can rusting fasteners cause structural problems, but they can also cause aesthetic problems as well. Improper fastener selection can cause unsightly rusting and streaking around the fastener heads.
3. Safety: Decks collapse in the United States daily, oftentimes causing injury and on occasion death. While there are many causes of these collapses, fastener and connector failure is a major factor. Using stainless steel (particularly type 316 stainless steel in saltwater conditions) helps minimize rust and maximize the structural integrity of your deck
